Dąbrowski watched the people the world called too much — too sensitive, too intense, too prone to anguish over things others walked past — and he noticed something the diagnosis had missed. The ones who suffered the sharpest inner conflict were often the ones who became the most fully themselves. Their crisis was not a deviation from health. It was the engine of it.

He called the process positive disintegration: the breaking-down of a lower, given structure of the self so a higher, chosen one can form. Most psychology of his era prized integration — adjustment, equilibrium, the smooth and well-adapted life. Dąbrowski turned this on its head. To be well-adjusted to a low level, he argued, is not health. It is arrest.

— On Dąbrowski, 1964

"The symptom was the architecture. The breakdown was the blueprint."

The Five Levels

A staircase that looks like a collapse.

  1. I.
    Primary integration
    The unexamined, given self.
  2. II.
    Unilevel disintegration
The first trembling; conflict without direction.
  3. III.
    Spontaneous multilevel
The self sees a higher and a lower in itself.
  4. IV.
    Organized multilevel
    The higher is chosen, deliberately.
  5. V.
    Secondary integration
The rebuilt self; intensity, in service.

A Lexicon for
the Coming-Apart.

The five overexcitabilities — nadpobudliwość — defined, and dressed.

Plate IV · The lexicon, embodied

i
Psychomotor
N. · The Body
A surplus of physical energy. Restlessness, rapid speech, a need to move, to act, to do. The intensity that cannot sit still — often misread as mere agitation.

Felt as: the leg that will not stop.

ii
Sensual
N. · The Senses
Heightened experience through the senses — texture, sound, taste, beauty. Pleasure and aversion both amplified; the world arrives louder, closer, more.

Felt as: the seam that ruins the shirt.

iii
Imaginational
N. · The Mind's Eye
A vivid, autonomous inner world. Dream, metaphor, invention, and dread — all rendered in high resolution. The imagination that will not be switched off.

Felt as: the future, already vivid.

iv
Intellectual
N. · The Question
A relentless drive to understand, analyse, and seek truth. The hunger for the question beneath the question — and the refusal of the easy answer.

Felt as: the why that will not close.

v
Emotional
N. · The Felt Sense
Deep, complex feeling. Empathy that registers a room's mood before language does. Attachments that run wider and ache longer than the social script accounts for.

Felt as: the room you feel before you enter it.

Disintegration is not collapse —
it is a movement caught between two shapes of the self.
